Directions on how to Use ABH kit for Makeup

Use darker shades to chisel the hollows of the cheeks and contour the temples and forehead to create a 3D effect.
Apply a darker shade along the jawline and blend down the neck to avoid a harsh line.
Using a narrow brush draw two parallel lines running down the bridge of the nose and connect under the nose to create the illusion of a delicate nose shape.
Using a lighter shade highlight the cupids bow above the lips, under the eyes and across the top of the cheekbones.
Highlight between the brows and centre of the forehead to make the brows appear crisp and bold.
Using a shimmering light shade lightly dust over the highlighted areas to create a natural shine.

In Detail Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit Light Medium Review and My Experience

The ABH contour kit comes in a black coloured cardboard palette. The palette has a magnetic closure. Inside there is a removable clear protective sheet. The pans containing the pigment sit in the grooves carved out perfectly. The bottom of the grooves have a magnet which keeps the pans firmly at their places. There is also a little space given by the edge of each pigment in case you want to take out the pan. So it gives us the freedom to place it on a different palette like a Z palette if we want to. Also, if one of the shades gets over, we can purchase just that one shade and we don’t have to get the whole set. The palette is missing a mirror.

The kit has 6 different shades ranging from its lightest to darkest. These are divided in 2 sets. The upper row has the shades suitable for highlighting whereas the bottom 3 shades are meant for contouring.

Top Row Left to Right

Vanilla

Like the name its a very pale matte off white colour with a slight peachy tint. It looks super pigmented on the pan however upon application it turns out to be sheer 🙁 So it needs a lot of building up before it can actually show. I do not see this working as an effective highlighter on my face. It would show up on medium skin tones but not on skin tones which are lighter.

Banana

Is a banana cream or very light creamy yellow shade. Now this shade is quite pigmented. It applies opaque on a swatch also blends very well. I specially love using this below my eyes (the area where we apply concealer). It just brightens up the area. I sort of now understand why the world was so crazy about this banana powder phenomenon. 😀

Sand

It looks very much like vanilla but has a little champagne tint to it. Its the only colour in this palette with some slight shimmers. Well more like a satiny finish. You won’t notice the shimmers unless you look close. Again this one is quite pigmented and shows up well on the skin. This is my favourite shade for highlighting. I use it on my brow bone area and on the inner corners of my eyes. When I want some light highlighter on my cheek bones, I use this one.

Java

Its a very tanned brown shade with red undertones. This is super pigmented so you have to be careful and apply it lightly. Its quite nice to contour with specially if you have red skin undertones. It shows up well on all skin tones. Great for a boldly contoured chiseled look.

Fawn

Fawn is the lightest colour among all the contour shades. Its matte beige based brown. For some reason I have heard people calling it grey-ish brown however I do not think it has grey. This shade is well pigmented. I am guessing fawn is meant for ladies who want to have very light or minimal contouring on their face.

Havana

Havana is the last contour colour in the palette. Its a warm brown shade. Will be perfect for ladies with warm skin undertones. Its very pigmented so shows up really well on all skin tones. In fact, I have been using this shade as a bronzer more often than I used it for contouring. It gives this gorgeous summer tanned look and does make the face look overly done.

Overall Verdict

This is officially my first highlight and contour kit. I am quite happy with all the shades except vanilla which I think is not pigmented enough and also that it does not show up well. I love the fact how the palette has variety of shades because one day I might want light contouring on my face and may be the other day I want more dramatic sculpted look. The lighter shades also help create a reverse contour. So I guess its pretty much a complete kit as far as contouring is concerned. For highlighting, there is a single shade suitable i.e. the “Sand” which is a very subtle highlighter shade.

I would recommend this palette to everyone who likes to contour. It has got all the shades that one might need to contour. This particular variety i.e. the Light to Medium Kit is perfect for Indian skin tones. I did have the chance to look at the “Deep Tan Contour Kit” however it had mostly lighter shades and didn’t appeal to me much. The Light to Medium kit can be used by all skin tones according to me.

If you ask me to comment upon the staying power, well each shade is quite different as far as texture, pigmentation and staying power is concerned. You will get a fair idea when you read my individual shade description above. However I would broadly comment upon them. Among the highlight shades, banana is most pigmented. Its powdery and best used to set my under eye concealer. Sand is a little bit shimmery and gives a wonderful satiny finish. Both these have a stay time of approximately 4-5 hours after which they start fading. The contour shades are all very pigmented. Have a very smooth and finely milled texture. These have a longer stay time of approximately 6-7 hours on my skin. However if you do sweat while this is on, the stay time would be significantly reduced.

This palette is a must have in my kit. If you are a makeup pro, beginner or just someone who likes to play with makeup, definitely check this palette out. My only concern is that although they have mentioned that the pans or individual shades can be refilled, I haven’t seen the individual shades listed out separately on their website or anywhere else. So I wonder how much are they going to cost. I am not saying the palette is very costly but it is costly enough to make me want to not use it everyday.

PROs of Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit Light Medium

1. I love the magnetic packaging, also the fact that the packaging gives us the freedom of alternate storage and individual refill.
2. Has 3 highlighting and 3 contouring shades.
3. Carefully selected pigments will suit all skin tones.
4. Decent stay time.
5. Shades are very blend able (I am not sure of Vanilla though)
6. Travel safe kit, minimal fall out from the pan.
7. Cruelty free.

CONs of Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit Light Medium

1. I can’t use the shade vanilla. Its not well pigmented, does not show up on the skin and does not stay for long.
2. I would have loved if they mentioned the shade names inside the palette.
3. No mirror or applicator provided with the palette.
4. Quite costly in India and not available easily.

MBF Advices

1. While contouring the cheeks, always aim for the area right below the cheek bones. If you go too far below, it gives an illusion of having bigger cheeks.
2. For more sculpted or chiseled look, try reverse contouring.
3. Never forget to set your makeup with loose or translucent powder even if you are going to use a makeup setting spray.
4. Always buy makeup from trusted sources.

  2. Love the detailed review. You have covered every point do precisely. Love the pictures as well. True, I have never seen anyone buying or mentioning single pan anywhere. Buying an entire kit for one shade is a bit too much. Loved the post 🙂

  3. Great swatches and a very detailed review. It’s feasible how a single pan can be included or taken out for another palette. That’s a winner.
