About Sabyasachi

Sabyasachi Mukherjee is a a well known fashion designer from Kolkata, India. He is also one of the Associate Designer Members of Fashion Design Council of India and the youngest board member of the National Museum of Indian Cinema. A little is known about his life. Young Sabyasachi wanted to study in NIFT while parents wanted him to become an engineer. When they denied funding his education in the fashion institute, Mukherjee sold his books to fund his own education at NIFT. We all know what the result was. He became India’s one of the most popular fashion designers. A lot of people don’t know but his pet name is “Pepsi” 🙂

Design Philosophy

Sabyasachi’s design philosophy is ‘Personalized imperfection of the human hand’. Deserts, gypsies, prostitutes, antique textiles and cultural traditions of his home town, Kolkata, have been a lifelong inspiration for this designer who believes that “clothes should just be an extension of one’s intellect”. He uses unusual fabrics, texturing and detailing, ‘fusion’ of styles, ‘patch-work’ with embellishments in a vibrant colors. His creations evoke images of ancient and medieval ages. He describes his own collections as ‘an International styling with an Indian soul‟. In the designs, he tries to maintain a non commercial balance in an extremely aggressive, commercial and competitive industry. His collection is for people who prefer to walk a path less traveled and who definitely believe that slowing down is not equivalent to dropping out.

His signature style is originality, as he moves between stunningly crafted bridal wear and perfectly structured western statements. The designer draws his inspiration from art such as the colourscapes of French impressionists like Monet and Henry Matisse in his clothes.

He pioneered the use of Indian textiles in a modern context. His unique contribution was the use of indigenous methods like bandhani, gotawork, block printing, hand dyeing etc. in construction of modern silhouettes.

I have shortlisted some of the very best of his bridal designs. Enjoy the Sabyasachi Bridal Lehenga Collection – Best ones

1. An Orange – red Lehenga with beautiful golden embroidery. The work is fine yet vibrant.  Inspiration seems to be the Rajasthani traditional lehenga. The Kundan jwellery adds the perfect charm to the bride.

2. Inspired by the great Queens of India, this maharani lehenga is pure class. Beautiful gold embellished beige lehenga with some of the very fine works. The design is royal and is a perfect depiction of Sabyasachi’s style.

3.  Another of such example. This master piece was showcased at the Delhi Couture Week in the year 2013. I love how classy he makes it look. We have less gold and more silver here.
btw, is the male model sleeping? 😛

4. I don’t know but this has a very intimate Indian touch to it. The pink and golden with border work appeals so much as an Indian traditional wear. Love the broad border work at the bottom of the lehenga skirt.

5.  Red is considered as the colour of an Indian bride. Below is a beautiful golden lehenga with golden work. Love the flow. Amazing intricate zari work. If you notice, with heavy lehenga, the chunni / dupatta / odhni is relatively kept simpler.

6. Green blouse and Red Lehenga Saree, made the perfect bride. We have the same design worn with different combinations of Green and red.

7.  This one is quite different in the way that the work and detailing are not fine. They are rather bold and sparkling. The heavy multicolour lehenga with a gorgeous odhni makes it perfect. I am in love with the beautiful work on the odhni. For those of you who don’t know the meaning of odhni, it is a rajasthani name to dupatta or chunni.
