What is the difference between a Lip Balm and Chapstick? A Detailed note on Lip Balms

I have often been asked what is the difference between a lip balm and a chapstick. More often than that, I have heard people using the two names inter changeably for both. People tend to call a lip balm as chapstick and a chapstick as lip balm. Now I am going to talk about this in a fairly detailed way

What is a Lip Balm

A lip balm is a medicated ointment of variable consistency which is used to soothe the lips or resolve any issues pertaining to them. Lip balm can come in various forms such as in small round tubs, jars, cylinders or twist up tubes like those of lipsticks. They may be applied using your fingers or directly applied if packaging is so designed. A lip balm may be clear where it contains only the base ingredients or it may be tinted. Tinted lip balms are aimed at providing lip soothing properties along with some degree of colour to your lips for a two in one experience. Tinted lip balms are quite popular these days specially among school and college going girls.

Lip balms are most commonly made of beeswax or similar ingredients which form a protective layer over the skin and prevent loss of moisture. They basically seal in all the moisture to prevent dryness. Now, not all lip balms are equal in effectiveness because of variable ingredients. The ingredients may be cent percent natural like beeswax, oils etc or there may be chemicals in them. Most lip balms bring down the degree of chapping and also do prevent chapping. Lip balms these days are coming with SPF which means they give you an added advantage of sun protection. This is an awesome concept specially because lips used to be the area which were very much exposed to sun damage. Dry lips are also caused due to dehydration.

Lipglosses and Lipsticks also may have similar ingredients and can give the pouts a hue while working as a soothing agent. Such lipglosses and lipsticks are those with vitamin E, aloe and certain other oils. Now one needs to be very careful while selecting lipsticks as well. Many lipsticks are known to have alcohol as an ingredient. If you are someone who suffers from dry lips often, check if the lipstick you are using has alcohol in it.
