As a first time inexperienced mother, I used to double or triple check everything that I used for my baby. From soaps, oils, lotions to even the material of her spread sheets, I scrutinise everything.

Oil massages for babies are a routine in every Indian house. Different people suggest various kinds of oils. For example, I was told to use olive oil, coconut oil, desi ghee (pure clarified butter), almond oil etc etc. So I did a little research and came across this oil by Kama Ayurveda. Let me talk more about my experience with this oil as I use it for my little angel.

How to Use Kama Ayurveda Ayurvedic Baby Massage Oil Lakshadi Thailam

Warm the oil slightly and gently massage into baby hair, face and body. Leave on for 10-15 minutes and cleanse with a mild baby cleanser and lukewarm water.

In Detail Kama Ayurveda Ayurvedic Baby Massage Oil Lakshadi Thailam Review, Swatches and My Experience

The oil comes in an amber coloured tall plastic bottle. The Packaging is simple yet informative. It has a golden screw lid on top. In fact the mouth of the bottle has a stopper with hole which ensures steady and controlled outflow of the oil. To be honest, I have nothing to complain about the packaging.

Kama Lakshadi oil is yellow in colour with moderate consistency. It smells very herbal. The smell actually is very soothing to the senses. This oil basically is a concoction of various natural elements in a base of sesame seed oil (That is why it is called Lakshadi Tailam).

How I Use this for my baby

I have been using this oil since my baby was 1 week old. Initially I used to massage her once a day. However elders at my house insisted that I massage her twice a day. So she has been getting one massage in the morning and another in the evening before bed. In fact, I use this oil for her evening massage. Specially because this has a very soothing smell that sort of creates a warmth sensation. You do not require a lot of it and this one bottle lasts approximately 3 months when used once daily for baby massage. I use it on her from top to toe.

Effects

Kama Lakshadi oil makes her skin very soft and supple. Before, I used to notice some dry patches on her skin. However, since I have started massaging her twice daily, her dry patches are gone. I particularly like this oil because of its soothing properties. Therefore I feel it kind of helps my baby fall asleep as well.

Kama claims that this oil protects against cold, cough and fever. However, I am not going to comment here because although my baby never had these problems, I feel an oil is not completely enough to prevent infections. Infections can be prevented by ensuring proper hygiene. So make sure everybody in your house washes their hands before touching or cuddling the baby specially when the baby is less than 6 months old.

Overall Verdict

I really like how this oil makes her skin so soft and moisturised. In addition, I love its soothing properties. Therefore, I really like this for my baby. The oil has some known anti bacterial ayurvedic ingredients like turmeric, sandalwood, deodar etc which may be helpful in preventing mild infections. But do not ever compromise on cleanliness around the baby. Also, I always use this for her evening massage because somehow I feel this helps her calm down and sleep peacefully.

2. Your paediatrician will best advise you on when to start oil massages for your baby.
3. Do not rely only on this for helping your baby sleep. My baby used to love being awake the entire night. With a lot of remedies, she has not finally started sleeping at night. Let me know if you guys want me to write on the methods I adopted which helped my baby sleep properly at night.
4. You do not necessarily have to use this particular oil. If this feels too expensive, you may try using other pure oils as well.
