Kumarika Nourishing Body Oil Review: Hi guys, I hope you’re having a great time with loved ones this holiday season. Winters are fun, but my dry skin does not agree with me. My shopping list around Diwali mostly includes body butters and lotions. We Indians love our body oils too specially because body massage is very much a part of our culture right from when we are babies to when we have to prep our skin for special occasions. So we are all pretty much familiar and comfortable with using a body oil as a moisturiser instead of lotions.

Kumarika is a relatively new brand but this is available on most online retailers. They do not have a huge product range currently, they mostly have hair oils, soaps, sanitisers etc.

In Detail Kumarika Nourishing Body Oil Review and My Experience

The Kumarika body oil comes in a very simple plastic bottle with a flip open/screw cap. It has a complete list of ingredients mentioned at the back. It is interesting how they promote it as a herbal blend of oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil and jojoba oil along with aloe vera. But like always, I do and keep encouraging everyone to always go through the ingredients list. Here;

  1. Now if you look at the ingredients list, the first ingredient is Paraffinum Liquidum. If you’ll allow, I’d like to elaborate a little about this ingredient. Paraffnium Liquidum is a petroleum derived product. It is one of the most commonly used Mineral Oil in cosmetics product, in fact this particular mineral oil is commonly known as Russian mineral oil. Mineral oils as such this one has absolutely no benefit for the skin. Our skin cells do not absorb it. Mineral oil sit on the skin or sit in between the cells. They might make the skin look smooth & shiny and suppress TEWL (transepidermal water loss) to an extent, but thats about it. In fact, they have no known benefits for the skin. Also, mineral oils are super cheap and very easily available. Therefore, to see this as the first ingredient in an oil which claims to be completely herbal is a little weird. Plus it is obvious that the maximum bulk of this product is made of something which has no benefit for the skin.
  2. Secondly you will notice, it has lots of extracts listed before the plant oils. That makes me wonder if they have actually put the ingredients list in the order of the concentration of the components (In general, the ingredient in highest concentration is listed first and then the list goes in descending order). However, the way they’ve put extracts first before oils makes me a little worried.
  3. Third, it does not feel like a plant oil at all. The physical feel of the oil is like a mineral oil. If you’ve used almond oil, olive oil etc, you know how they feel rich and emollient. But this one feels like a mineral oil if I am being bluntly honest. Plus do not be fooled by the smell. It contains Parfum as an ingredient too.
  4. You might feel I am being too critical, but let me make it up. It definitely contains some really amazing ingredient. For example a product containing centella asiatica extract it this price – are you kidding?? Besides, it also has amla (Indian gooseberry) extract, liquorice extract.
  5. If you see the bottle, it has some roots and some cut herbs floating within the substance of the oil. These roots are liquorice roots and the cut herbs are probably aloe vera. These are really pretty to look at plus they might be good may be because the oils is continuously soaking.

How I use it and Effects

They advise to use this as pre or post bath oil. I used it both ways. Pre bath oiling feels really good specially if you have someone who could give you a nice massage. I do not have such luxury right now yet I enjoyed using this. Pre bath oil also works as oil cleanser. So double the benefits.

As post bath oil, this feels nice on the skin specially because it keeps the moisture locked in to the skin. But remember to apply in on slightly moist skin like immediately after a shower. Once the skin becomes dry, it won’t do much because in itself, it is not very moisturising. In fact, you could also apply a light moisturiser and then apply this oil to lock in the moisture.

It has a really nice smell to it which lingers on for a while too. Apart from this, like they claim, it is indeed a non-sticky oil. So if you do not like the chip chip feeling of regular oils, you may want to give this a try. Also, I am not sure about the glowy effect. I mean yes, the mineral oils make our skin look shiny because they coat the skin and reflect light which gives the appearance of glow. But thats just visual effects according to me. I am just putting it out there.

Final Verdict

I have to say that this is one of the most affordable body oils available in the market. It has some really nice herbal extracts including centella asiatica which in itself is a kind of costly ingredient. However it also lists an ordinary mineral oil as its major base which makes me think 🤔 if this actually is extraordinary. Apart from that, usage wise this does feel good on the skin. But I am not sure if I would repurchase it. I might repurchase it for using it as a pre bath oil but for a post bath oil, I would want something more moisturising and something preferably with a lot less or may be nil mineral oil.

CONs of Kumarika Nourishing Body Oil

  1. Seeing mineral oil as the first major ingredient makes me wonder if its justified to promote it as a herbal product.
  2. Not sure if the ingredient list is in order ( I may be wrong, but its just a logical guess).

MBF Advises

  1. Use it as a pre bath oil, works as an oil cleanser for the body.
  2. Use it on moisturised skin, it will work a lot better.
  3. Think of this as a mineral oil which has added plant oils and natural extracts. I feel thats the actual description. Hence this is best and in fact the best oil for using as a pre bath oil.
