In Detail Nykaa Ultra Matte Lipstick Coco 17 Review, Swatches and My Experience

Nykaa has a nice innovative packaging for their ultra matte lipsticks. Black case with a colour coded cap. The lipstick has a broad square shape. It has a magnetic close mechanism. The bottom has the colour coded label with shade details. Also, the date of manufacture as well as expiry is written on the base itself. Overall, really good packaging.

Nykaa ultra matte has a nice smell to it, like vanilla – pretty similar to MAC lipsticks. The top is also shaped like that.

Shade – Coco by Nykaa Ultra Matte

Each lipstick in Ultra Matte range by Nykaa has a name inspired by a beauty icon. This shade Coco derives its inspiration from Coco Chanel.

Nykaa Ultra Matte Coco is a very unique shade. I cannot put it under reds or pinks or any specific colour family. Nykaa describes this as “dark berry matte”. If I may put it in words, it has this washed out brick red base with magenta pink undertones. The bullet looks almost red, but the actual colour on the skin is very unique.

Also, I notice that the shade looks slightly different under different lights and on different skin tones. Nevertheless, it will suit all skin tones. In the pictures below, I actually clicked the lip swatches under 2 different light conditions. One in natural light and another set in camera lights. You will notice that the shade looks slightly different.

Texture, Pigmentation, Finish

The texture of lipstick is super matte. Hence, it might feel a little dry if your lips are not prepped properly. In the natural lights photos below, I swatched it on bare lips without prepping or lining. You will notice it that the margins do not look defined because of the slightly dry texture of the lipstick. Hence, I strongly suggest lining your lips with a lip brush or a matching lip liner in order to achieve precise margins. Also, prepping your lips makes them appear healthier.

Pigmentation is totally on point. One swipe gives enough pigmentation to cover slightly pigmented lips like mine. But lets be real, who actually swipes their lipsticks just once on the lips? Personally I go at least 2 to 3 times. So after 2-3 swipes, you will see that this will cover deep pigmentation of the lips as well.

The lipstick has a beautiful super matte finish on the lips. Please remember that such lipstick formulas, irrespective of the brand may tend to be slightly drying on the lips. Hence, it is very important that you moisturise your lips well before putting them on. Or else, it is natural that they might feel a little drying on the lips.

Staying Power, Transferability

The lipstick stays on my lips for 5 hours on an average with light snacks or beverages. With oily meals, this wear time will come down. Also, this isn’t completely transfer proof. It does slightly transfer on cups but thankfully, does not loose its intensity on the lips easily.

Overall Verdict

I think Nykaa’s ultra matte lipstick in coco is a beautiful shade. It has almost all good qualities of a super matte bullet lipstick. I would highly recommend this shade Coco to all lipstick lovers because it is a very unique shade. It will flatter all skin tones.

For removing it, please use a good oil based makeup remover. It leaves a deep berry tint on the lips which is quite hard to remove.
