In Detail Maybelline The Rock Nudes Eye Shadow Palette Review, Swatches and My Experience

Coming to the review of Maybelline the Rock Nudes palette. The packaging is very much like the other palettes of Maybelline Nudes Edition like the Maybelline Blushed Nudes. It has got 12 shades. The total weight of the pigments together is 10 grams. The palette is sold for around USD 10.00 which when converted to Indian currency comes around Rs. 600/- but Maybelline has priced this at Rs. 925/- in India which in fact, does seem slightly expensive for a drugstore brand. But for 12 shades, I don’t really mind.

According to Maybelline experts, the shadows in this palette can be used in 3 different ways. As Quads, as trios and as Duos. I have drawn an illustration below trying to explain how these quads, trios and duos would work. But then again, we are all free to do makeup the way we want to. I am just trying to explain what Maybelline wanted to suggest for its usage.

Duos, Trios and Quads

So as you can see, the shades vary from very light to extremely dark. This palette has the perfect set of shades if you are someone like me who loves to do smokey eyes whether its day time or night time. For day time, I like to use the shades on the left half of this palette. For night, I use the shades on the right half of this palette more.

Formula, Pigmentation and Texture

I have been using this palette everyday non stop since I got it. As much as I love it, I do have some issues that I genuinely think Maybelline needs to improve upon. Firstly, is the inconsistency with the formula and pigmentation. Some shades I found more pigmented than the others. I mean in a palette, I always expect each shade to have similar formula if not exactly the same. However, some shades in the palette apply very chalky and gritty. In fact, with almost all shades, I experienced a lot of fall out. Secondly, the texture of these shadows I felt is pretty dry. They mostly apply sheer with patchiness unless I use a really good primer underneath. Lastly, these shadows don’t blend well at all.

Also I do not understand why do they call this palette a “Nudes” palette. This palette has lighter shades in form of creams, silver, white and taupe on the left hand side. On the right hand side it has deeper, shimmer mixed mattes and blacks. Where does the traditional “Nudes” come into play? I have no clue.

Overall Verdict

On the brighter side, this palette has a great set of shades for creating smokey eye makeup looks. I do feel like the palette is missing a good transition shade, but still I make it work somehow. Also, with a good Eye Primer, the shadows do perform better in terms on colour pay off.

Overall, the stay power of eyeshadows in this palette is around 3-4 hours. With a good eye primer, the shades last for an hour or so longer. Also, if I am sweating or working out, these shadows fade out really quickly.

1. Inconsistency in the formula of the shades.
2. Some shades are chalky, patchy or gritty.
3. Pigmentation isn’t the best as well as there is a lot of fall out.
4. The shades do not blend well.
5. Lasting power isn’t great.

MBF Advises

1. Use a good eyeshadow primer before using this eyeshadow palette. My favourite is the MAC Eyeshadow primer.
2. Always make sure to pat the eyeshadow on the eyelids and then start blending.
3. Use MAC Fix Plus to intensify the pigmentation of the eyeshadows.
